Amanda Tanen is the beautiful but vain receptionist at Mode, she is also the first person whom Betty meets on her first day at the magazine. She and Betty have an extremely quarrelsome relationship, owing to the fact that Amanda has attemped to sabotage any good things that happen to Betty.

In Season 1 we discover that Amanda's real mother is the now deceased Fey Sommers, she tries to tell the world about it which at the start, goes wrong, but when Marc causes her dress to fall off, she gets the attention she loves.

At the start of Season 1, Amanda meets Betty and mistakes her for a foreign model, then delivering something, then Betty tells her she works for Daniel.

Amanda: "Are you the before? Foreign photoshoot? Are you delivering something?"

Betty:"Oh, no! I work here!"

After discovering that Betty had no proper jobs, she was annoyed, as she was told that she didn't have enough experiance.
